"As early as 1928, Vollard exchanged with André Suarès about a text to be created to accompany Picasso's drawings. Georges Aubert seems to have engraved the woods quickly, Suarès having already selected and placed the plates in his text in May 1931. Suspended by the death of Vollard, the work was published by the Nouveau Cercle Parisien du Livre in 1955. Its final form is more modest: of the 89 woods retained by Suarès, it has only 22.
