A determined and adventurous ceramist, Gisèle Buthod-Garçon has been exploring the American raku technique for several decades, establishing herself as one of the pioneers of this type of firing with ancestral roots. Her work is fundamentally rooted in freedom: the freedom of her atypical and voluntary training, followed by the freedom of her ceramic experimentation. Based in Saint-Quentin-la-Poterie, she works with clay in the manner of a sculptor, then immerses her still-glowing pieces in combustible materials, which reveal cracks, reflections and iridescence. Each of her creations is unique, the fruit of the encounter between the elements and her "alchemical" approach. Her pieces bear witness to a certain poetry and sensuality, which she explores both through her shapes and volumes, and through the high-quality workmanship of her glazes. Inspired by the body, gestures and emotions, but also by her many travels, Gisèle Buthod-Garçon's work is constantly evolving and renewing itself.
Her work has been celebrated by major solo exhibitions, notably at the Centre Kéramis in La Louvière in 2018 and at La Piscine - Musée d'Art et d'Industrie André Diligent in Roubaix in 2013 - a museum that also houses a dozen of her works in its permanent collection.
