[GENEALOGY - IMBAULT]. [Genealogy of the Imbault family]. S.l., circa 1750 - Manuscript in-folio, 361 x 240. Marbled calf, gilt border and gilt coat of arms on covers, "Généalogie" in gilt lettering on first cover, ornate ribbed spine, inner gilt border, red edges (period binding). A handsome 87-page manuscript document presenting the genealogy of the Imbault family from Brittany, from Raoul Imbault, baron de Eusback, originally from Mainz in the 7th century, to Michel Imbault seigneur de Marigny born at the end of the 17th century, who married Elizabeth Malgrain on November 9, 1713. The manuscript begins with "Extrait des Registres de la Chambre Etablie par le Roy pour la reformation de la noblesse au pays et duché de Bretagne, par lettres patentes de sa Majesté du mois de Janvier mil six cent soixante huit", "portant acte de la déclaration du dit Imbault (Melaine Imbault), de vouloir maintenir la qualité d'Ecuyer par luy et ses prédécesseurs pris, et qu'il porte pour Armes de gueules à cinq Bandes d'argent". The document is illustrated with a drawing of a squire supporting the ancient Imbault arms (page 12), a woman holding flowers and surrounded by two coats of arms at the head of page 15, and 56 painted coats of arms. Also included, bound at the head, are the large arms of the Imbault family and its descendants, painted on vellum skin. This manuscript appears to be unfinished, and after the last person described, there are 25 blank pages that have been ruled and numbered. A very fine copy bearing the Imbault coat of arms, from the collection of the lawyer and scholar Anatole Basseville (1834-1923), member of the Société d'Agriculture, Sciences, Belles-Lettres et Arts d'Orléans, president of the Société archéologique et historique de l'Orléanais. Some wear to spine, corners slightly dulled, crack to hinge of first cover, level with first box. Provenance: Anatole Basseville, with bookplate. - Pierre Berès, with bookplate.
