The Maître des Entrées (or Maître de l'Entrée de François Ier à Lyon; in English, "Entry Master") was an artist active in Lyon from circa 1493 to 1517. The artist is named after the copy of the description of the royal entry in 1515 in Lyon (Wolfenbüttel, Herzog August Bibliothek, Cod. Extr. 86.4; Burin, 2001, cat. 94). Hypothetically identified by E. Burin with Jean Pingault, a writer and illuminator commissioned to paint the decorations for François I's entry into Lyon, he is credited with numerous manuscripts, including a Lectionary and Benedictionary for the collegiate church of Saint-Nizier in Lyon (Lyon, BM, MS 5136; Burin, 2001, cat. 74) and this charter for the priory of Saint-Albin, featuring a large illumination in a compartmentalized frame (Paris, ENSBA, Masson 135). He painted several books of hours, for example Lyon, BM, MS 577 (with an Annunciation to the shepherds, fol. 56); Paris, BnF, latin 1404 or latin 9475. Several manuscripts attributed to the Maître des Entrées feature similar compartmentalized borders, and note the particular treatment of grass and vegetation, as well as the radiant cloud in the sky, similar examples of which can be found in the work of this artist (e.g. Missel (London, Museum of the Order of Saint John), Burin, 2001, cat. 70).
