Édouard Vuillard (1868-1940)
Little Girl at the Wheel. Circa 1899. Lithograph. [408 x 528]. Roger-Marx 46. Unique trial proof on chine volant, printed in color using 3 stones (gray, yellow and dark blue), before the bistre stone, before erasing the size crosses as well as a chromist's annotation in the upper left margin and innumerable stains, fingerprints and soiling at the edges of the stones (bistre-colored, announcing the work on the stone here still missing).
Verso, another subject: a child seen from behind in a pink dress in the alley of a square, a seated woman sketched to his left. Pastel sketch (pink, bright green, blue and brown) for an unfinished print. 315 x 400. (The subject was probably intended for inclusion in the Paysages et Intérieurs suite commissioned by Vollard).
Fine folds at the edges of the folio, including an oblique one in the upper left corner on the recto. Another fine curved fold in the white of the woman's skirt in yellow. Numerous traces of surface rubbing. Full margins.

"This lithograph, which remained in the sketch state, was only printed on three or four attempts, one without the blue plate." (Claude Roger-Marx, L'œuvre gravé de Vuillard, Monte-Carlo, A. Sauret, p. 128). Our proof is a unique trial proof with a pastel sketch for an unpublished lithograph on the reverse, described by Claude Roger-Marx, who had seen it in the collection of Jacques Salomon (painter and author of several books on Vuillard, son-in-law of Ker-Xavier Roussel, whose daughter Annette he married, and Vuillard's nephew by marriage: K.-X. Roussel had married Marie Vuillard, Edouard's sister).

Roger-Marx mentions having seen our proof, but does not reproduce it: "On the reverse of a trial proof, the sketch of an unexecuted lithograph: a square with, in the foreground, seen from behind, a child in a red dress (Coll. Salomon)." (Claude Roger-Marx, op. cit.). It should be noted that the child's dress is a deep pink.

This pastel appeared in an exhibition at Galerie Hugette Berès, 25 quai Voltaire, in April-May 1956. It was reproduced as a lithographed poster by Mourlot to announce this exhibition ("E. Vuillard, le lithographe - dessins, pastels, gouaches").

A certificate from Mathias Chivot (Vuillard Archives) will be issued to the buyer.
