Félicien ROPS (1833-1898). 2 L.A.S. with drawings, to Edmond Haraucourt; 3pages and 1 1/2 pages in-8.
Paris Tuesday 19th. His engraving dealer having bailed on him, he asks his friend, "now one of our big capitalists", to lend him 600 francs: "at the beginning of April I'll have serious income, & I'll pay you back the capital, & the interest in unpublished proofs!" He signs "Fély", and draws, on the double inside page, a "candle burning at both ends with the motto Vita per ignem!", and a second of a "more heraldic & chaudepissarde form!"
Tuesday. He's late: "I was waiting for funds, 'des pépettes' as we war people used to say, - in Belgium. And now there's a snag on the Guiches board! [for La pudeur de Sodome 1888?] And it has to be repaired! Can't leave the unfortunate Guiches with his useless board! But it'll be finished tomorrow evening, without fail! So Thursday - at last! Enfin!!!!!" He'll be able to join him in Contrexéville. He draws himself seated at his work table, seen from behind, with the caption: "Rops repairing Guiches's board", and ends his letter with these words: "Con de Rex de Ville que tu es!!!! You're making me goofy!"
Enclosed are 2 pen-and-ink drawings (1page oblong in-8 each, crease cracks): a cyclist on a large-wheeled velocipede, captioned: "Ne l'oubliez pas"; and "La Muse S.B. [Sarah Bernhardt] couronnant la Vélopoésie. We look forward to seeing you Saturday morning".
