*FÉLIX VALLOTTON (1865-1925) - Uzanne (Octave), et al. Badauderies parisiennes.
The Gatherings. Physiologies of the street observed and noted by Paul Adam, Alfred Athys, Victor Barrucand, Tristan Bernard, Léon Blum, Romain Coolus, Félix Fénéon, Gustave Kahn, Ernest La Jeunesse, Lucien Muhlfeld, Thadée Natanson, Edmond Pilon, Jules Renard, Pierre Veber and Eugène Veek. Prologue by Octave Uzanne. Paris, printed for the Bibliophiles indépendants, Henri Floury, 1896. A small vol. in-4 [200 x 260] illustrated with reproductions (gillotages) of hors-texte drawings by Vallotton on japon fort. Vignettes in-text by F. Courboin. A very fresh copy, one of the 200 numbered copies, printed for subscribers only. Large light brown spots on the first few leaves. Rare. Bound in half-chagrin with gilt corners and fillets, spine decorated, marbled paper boards. Ex-libris Alex Thomas; Henri Thuile.
The work is published by Octave Uzanne for the young Society of Independent Bibliophiles. The editor presents his work as "the first attempt at a luxury edition, with the help of writers of the last hour". These authors are for the most part linked to the Revue blanche. This is the first book in which the name of Félix Vallotton appears as an engraver: "Félix Vallotton has always seemed to me to take pleasure in expressing, in a vaguely ironic way, the movement of the street and of the strolling life of Paris. It is with the notion of this taste dominating his work that the idea came to me to ask him for a series of brutalist prints on the Parisian Badauderie..." (p. V).
"Although published by Floury for the Bibliophiles indépendants, the project directly involves the magazine. In his "prologue," Uzanne explains that he gave up writing the book himself in order to "call upon the young qualities of a group of poets, humorists, critics and essayists," which is none other than "the brilliant and dashing editorial staff of the Revue blanche," described as carrying "the battle flag of the rising generation," ready "for the assault on Demain. More effectively than the journal itself, Les Rassemblements isolates and makes visible the hard core of the editorial staff around common aesthetic issues." (Clément Dessy, "An Aesthetic of the Street. La Revue blanche au cœur de la ville," in Romantisme, 2016/1 (No. 171), pp. 74-88).
