HOMER. The Iliad, new translation. Paris : Barbou, Moutard, Ruault, 1776. - 3 volumes in-8, 227 x 138 : frontispiece, (2 ff.), lv, 260 pp. ; frontispiece, (2 ff.), 301 pp., (1 f. blank) ; frontispiece, (2 ff.), 286 pp., (1 f.). Red morocco, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, ornate spine, inner gilt roulette, blue tabis lining and endpapers, gilt edges (period binding). Cohen, 495. - Christian Michel, Charles-Nicolas Cochin et le livre illustré au XVIIIe siècle, Droz, 1987, p. 331, n° 161. It is illustrated with 3 very beautiful frontispieces in first edition, engraved by Romanet, Delaunay and Gaucher after Cochin fils. These plates are dated 1775 and 1776. Cohen mentions them in the 1773 edition but Christian Michel thinks, rightly, that these are copies to which the plates were added later. A PRECIOUS REGULATED EXAMPLE, ON LARGE PAPER, enriched with a state before the letter of the first two frontispieces, and the pure etching, a state before the letter and a state with the caption in small characters of the third frontispiece. TWO ORIGINAL DRAWINGS BY COCHIN FILS HAVE ALSO BEEN ADDED. the first, at the head of the first volume, is a sketch set in tile for the frontispiece. Above the drawing it was noted in ink at the time: "de L'Iliade, de Le Brun". The second is the finished pencil drawing of the third frontispiece, pasted by the edges on stained laid paper and surrounded by a frame of ink and watercolor fillets. These two drawings have been mounted later, as well as the different states of the frontispieces. Scattered foxing. The linings and endpapers have been renewed but certainly in the 18th century, to give a more luxurious look to the copy. One can see in places that the tabis covers a marbled paper.
