FRAGONARD (Jean-Honoré).
Figures of the tales of La Fontaine.
Paris : P. Didot l'aîné, [1795]. - Album in-4, 324 x 252 : 20 plates, printed cover. Dark brown half morocco with corners, gilt filets, smooth spine decorated, gilt head, untrimmed, cover preserved (Canape).
Cohen 574-582.
Complete album of the 20 beautiful engravings intended to illustrate the tales of La Fontaine published by Pierre Didot in 1795.
Pierre Didot's project had been to make an edition rivaling in beauty with that of the Fermiers généraux (1762)

.

He entrusted Fragonard with the execution of the drawings. Fragonard, who started around 1780, made only 57 of the 80 planned. Didot printed the text but, faced with the failure of the project, published only two issues of 10 engravings each. Of the 20 plates published, 16 were engraved after Fragonard's drawings, 2 after Touzé, 1 after Mallet and 1 after Monnet.
It is a copy of these two issues that we propose here, with one of the original covers, here printed on pink paper. This cover is interesting because it specifies the title of the engravings as well as the edition of the suites which amounts to 550 on wove paper. We know that there are also at least two suites on Hollande.
The proofs presented here would be part of the 400 with the letter, i.e. with the numbers.
Beautiful copy bound by Canape. The numbers of some plates have been cut by the binder.
