GUITRY (Sacha). Mozart. Paris : Eugène Fasquelle, 1926. - In-8 re-sized to in-4, 329 x 280. Red cloth with bradel, smooth spine, case (modern binding). CORRECTED PROOF COPY of what is probably the only known copy of this attempted edition of Mozart, a comedy in three acts by Sacha Guitry first performed at the Edouard VII theatre on December 2, 1925. The main role was played by Yvonne Printemps. This is an edition dated 1926 which never saw the light of day. It includes 4 unnumbered leaves and 98 pages. Each page has been corrected here, sometimes very extensively, by Sacha Guitry himself. There are many textual corrections but also layout corrections. There is also an entirely autograph page concerning the set. Some pages are dated 29 June 1920 (for 1926) and 1 July 1926. The original edition was not published until 1949, in volume 5 of the author's works, series Cinq cents ans d'histoires de France. This copy was prepared by Jacques Crépineau who enriched it with 14 ORIGINAL COSTUMES STUDIES FOR THE CHARACTERS OF THE PLAY, INTENDED FOR THE FIRST REPRESENTATION OF 1925. All these studies were done in watercolor with sometimes gouache highlights, in a 4-page format . Two are signed by Charles Bétout, nine bear the stamp of the Pascaud company which specialised in stage costumes, one bears the initials CB, and two bear neither stamp nor signature. The drawing of the costume for Sacha Guitry in the second act, has in addition a small sample of fabric pinned on. Jacques Crépineau has added other documents relating to the play, some of lesser importance, including the original 1925 programme for the play and an original photograph by the Parisian photographer Waléry, depicting one of the scenes in the play. All the proof sheets and the photograph have been re-sized to fit the drawings.
