James-J.-J. Tissot (1836-1902)
Mediunimic appearance. 1885. Black manners. 345 x 492. Wentworth 76. Superb Japanese-imitation print, 1st state (of 2), before the letter. One freckle in the right margin. All margins.
" Tissot practised engraving in black manner between 1883 and 1886 essentially, with real talent and in large format. Interestingly, it was on his return to France that he used this technique, which was popular in England, to represent Kathleen Newton, his recently deceased companion. Here Kathleen emerges from the deep blacks in the company of the medium William Eglinton. The work is the translation of a painting that Tissot kept all his life. "(Exhibition James Tissot (1836-1902), l'ambigu moderne, Paris, Musée d'Orsay, 2020).
