Odilon Redon (1840–1916) Old Knight. 1896. Lithograph. 234 x 293 [430 x 570 mm]. Mellerio 158; Johnson 101. A very fine and fresh print on applied China paper, signed with initials in pencil. A few very faint foxing spots on the paper. Tiny indentation in the head, visible only under low-angle light. All margins intact. Final edition of 100 prints for the *Album des peintres-graveurs*, published by A. Vollard in 1896. AABM stamp (Lugt 3075). This lithograph embodies the spiritual quest and melancholy of the solitary hero at the end of his life, where the warrior’s pensive profile—drawn from the Italian Primitives—evokes the wisdom gained through battle and a form of introspection. The intense shadow characteristic of Redon’s “Noirs” symbolizes the mystery of the unconscious and a withdrawal into oneself in the face of decline. Finally, the contrast of light on his face conveys a mystical redemption, transforming the old knight into a figure of timeless absoluteness. Behind him, a wheel evoking the wheel of life and fortune, a winged sphinx, and an ethereal woman with her arm raised add to the symbolic and dreamlike atmosphere.
