Alfons Mucha (Czech, 1860–1939)
Wine of the Incas. Poster (large format). 1897. Lithograph. [2400 x 760 mm]. Rennert-Weill 43. Color print. A very fine print on thin vellum in two joined pieces; the colors are very fresh; mounted on board. A large, faint trace of oxidation in the center of the subject. Small traces of glue on the surface at the seam. Short tears and minor imperfections along the edges of the sheet. All margins intact.

" Originally titled *La Coca des Incas*, according to early references in *La Plume* and *L’Estampe et l’Affiche*, *Le Vin des Incas* was apparently a coca-based potion sold in pharmacies with the vague medical claim of helping “convalescents”. [...] There is a mystery surrounding this print. The face of the Indian is an exact replica of that of a priest carved on the bas-relief of a stele that can still be seen at the Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City. " (J. Rennert and A. Weill, Alphonse Mucha: All Posters and Signs, Paris, Hjet & Hjet, 1984, no. 43, p. 176).
