Charles Méryon (1821–1868) From the collection of Rochoux, print dealer. Circa 1855. Etching. 120 x 88 [250 x 340 mm]. Delteil 87; Schneiderman 57 (v/v). Very fine print executed in two tones (red and black) on cream-colored laid paper. A few faint foxing spots. Pencil annotation at the bottom: “Delâtre Sienna and black.” Full margins. AABM stamp (Lugt 3075). Armand-Ambroise Rochoux (1813–c. 1871) was a prominent Parisian print dealer, publisher, and art expert who ran a shop at 19 Quai de l’Horloge on the Île de la Cité. His gallery was particularly renowned for dealing in antique engravings, drawings, and historical portraits. As a recognized expert in Paris (who regularly served as an auctioneer at the Hôtel Drouot), Rochoux authored numerous auction catalogs for prestigious 19th-century art collections. In particular, he orchestrated the dispersal of the collections of Mr. Laterrade (portraits and historical pieces predating the Revolution); Eugène Tondu (drawings from the Italian, French, and Dutch schools); Pierre Defer of Lyon (antique prints). He made a name for himself in collector circles with his *Observations on the Introduction to Mr. D.-G. de Arozarena’s Print Catalog*, a critical pamphlet published in the wake of an artistic controversy of the time.
