Charles-François Daubigny (1817–1878)
The Monk. 1838. Etching and roulette (the figure of the monk engraved by Meissonier). 146 x 105 [157 x 107 mm]. Delteil, Henriet 1. Beautiful print on laid paper, likely a proof with test lines in the margins of the copper plate. Scattered light foxing. Minor damage in the lower right corner, reinforced on the reverse. Tiny loss in the lower left corner. Narrow margins. Extremely rare: Delteil knew of only three proofs of this subject. Presumably one of the three proofs cited by Loÿs Delteil. Pencil initials of Arsène Bonafous-Murat on the reverse. AABM stamp (Lugt 3075).

“The plate was planed after a few trial prints were made.” (Frédéric Henriet, *Charles Daubigny et son œuvre gravé*, Paris, A. Lévy, 1875, p. 75).
