Encounter with Moorish Horsemen. 1834. Etching (possibly by Célestin Nanteuil). 270 x 190 [272 x 206 mm]. Delteil, Strauber 23. Very fine print on mounted China paper. Trace of a horizontal fold along the lower edge. Narrow margins. AABM stamp (Lugt 3075). "It now appears [...] that the etching may be by Célestin Nanteuil after a drawing by Delacroix. As Johnson noted, even though three impressions of the etching were sold at Delacroix’s posthumous auction as his own work, Robaut [...] accepted Maurice Tourneux’s view that the etching was by Nanteuil. [...] The fact that Delacroix made the drawing is supported by two pen-and-ink drawings, both signed and dated 1834. [...] In short, it now appears that there was a small deluxe edition of the album *Le Musée* with illustrations printed from the original etched plates. Experts disagree on the number of prints in this edition [20 or 30]; the images were then transferred and printed as lithographs for the regular edition. " (Loÿs Delteil, Translated and Revised by Susan Strauber, *Delacroix: The Graphic Work, A Catalogue Raisonné*, San Francisco, Alan Wofsy Fine Arts, 1997, p. 58, notes).
