Charles-Germain de Saint-Aubin (1721–1786)
The Bath. (Plate from the series *Premier Essai de papilloneries [sic] humaines*). Circa 1756–1760. Etching. 272 x 188 [297 x 215 mm]. Baudicour 2; Portalis and Beraldi 1. A very fine print on laid paper; the engraved name appears to have been erased (as on the print in the National Gallery of Art, Washington). Scattered light foxing. Remnants of mounting tabs on the reverse. Good margins. Very rare. Formerly in the collection of Frederick Augustus II of Saxony (Lugt 971); H. J. Delacroix (Lugt 3604). AABM stamp (Lugt 3075).

In this first series of *Papillonneries humaines*, it appears that the print states have remained unknown to catalogers. As in the second series, it appears that there was an initial state with the engraved name, followed by a second state in which it was erased.
