ROBERT-DUMESNIL (Alexandre-Pierre-François) - DUPLESSIS (Georges) - BAUDICOUR (Prosper de).
The French Painter-Engraver, or A Catalog Raisonné of Prints Engraved by Painters and Draftsmen of the French School.
Paris: [various publishers], 1835–1871. — 13 volumes, in-8, 220 x 135. Speckled beige paper board, smooth spine, untrimmed (contemporary binding).

First edition of this reference work, a comprehensive catalog raisonné of prints engraved by painters and draftsmen of the French school from the 15th to the 18th century.

Comprising 13 volumes, the project was initiated by the print collector and art historian Alexandre-Pierre-François Robert-Dumesnil (1778–1864), who authored the first 8 volumes (1835–1850). The next two volumes (1865–1868), which he had begun, and the eleventh (1871), were published by Georges Duplessis, curator of the print collection at the National Library. The final two volumes (1859–1861) were published in the meantime by Prosper de Baudicour under the title *Le Peintre-graveur français continué*.

A fine, interfoliated copy from the collection of the lawyer, historian, and bibliophile Édouard Meaume (1812–1886), author notably of a study on Jacques Callot. It contains numerous handwritten annotations in the margins or on the interleaves. Volume 9 bears this handwritten, signed dedication on the half-title page:

To Mr. Ed. Meaume // an affectionate tribute from his most grateful // servant Georges Duplessis

The painters’ names have been written on the spine of each volume.

Spines are discolored; some corners are worn; the spines of volumes 11 and 12 are coming apart; the hinges of the last volume are fragile. The half-title page and title page of the first volume are discolored by an inserted leaf stating that this is Meaume’s copy.
