[MAGAZINE].
Sagitario. Revista del siglo XX.
Mexico City, September 1–November 1, 1926. — 4 folio-sized issues, stapled.

Set of 3 issues, including one duplicate, out of the 14 published, of this very rare Mexican magazine from the 1920s.

“Sagitario, the personal magazine that Humberto Rivas founded and edited in Mexico between 1926 and 1927, was not merely a belated extension of Spanish Ultraism, even though it revived several texts from its glory days. While Europe was embarking on a ‘return to order,’ Rivas sought to bridge the gap between the excesses of the avant-garde and the surrounding political reality, straddling two very different eras and countries.
Its pages feature Spanish and Hispanic American authors—including his brother José Rivas Panedas, with whom he had founded the magazine *Ultra* in Madrid, as well as Jorge Luis Borges—along with artists, primarily Mexican” (introduction to the book *Sagitario. Edited by Carlos García and Pilar García-Sedas, published in 2024).

The set offered here consists of two copies of issue 4 (September 1, 1926), and one copy each of issues 5 (October 1, 1926) and 6 (November 1, 1926). It features texts by J. M. Puig Casauranc (“La Instruccion y la Culture en México”), Humberto Rivas, Eugenio d’Ors, Gabriel Almar, Moreno Villa, Alfonso Reyes, and others, as well as translations of works by Rimbaud and Apollinaire.

The covers of issues 5 and 6 are illustrated with a composition by Santos Balmori (1898–1992), a Mexican painter and future muralist who trained in Paris.

Stains on the covers.
