PICASSO (Pablo) - GODET (Robert J.).
The Age of the Sun.
Paris: Published at the author’s expense, 1950. — In-4, 283 x 228: frontispiece, 78 pp., (1 f.), illustrated cover. Paperback.

Cramer, no. 57.

First edition of Godet’s debut book as an author—he who was the publisher of Desnos, Hugnet, and Michaux.

“His main character is a ‘Stranger,’ who turns out to be at once God, the World, and the author himself. Over the course of 21 chapters, we follow the imaginary journey of this Stranger, whom we encounter, among other places, in Russia, India, and Italy, as well as in a Catholic convent and in the studio of the ‘great painter Rack.’ In the end, the author achieves acceptance of himself and of humanity, not without the help of what he calls the ‘higher consciences’” (Cramer).

The edition was printed in a run of 1,114 copies, each illustrated with a drawing by PICASSO depicting a woman’s head, reproduced in the style of an etching.

A proof copy, unnumbered, printed on standard vellum paper. It is enhanced with a silver-print proof of the drawing on a black background, as well as a drypoint after Pablo Picasso (“ La Torera”), printed in an edition of 116 copies, which is usually found in the first copies, dated on the copper plate “Saturday, April 29, 1944” and unsigned.

Very well-preserved copy.
