LÉGER (Fernand) - ELUARD (Paul). Freedom, I Write Your Name. Paris: Pierre Seghers, [circa 1960]. — Leporello 290 x 1117 mm (unfolded), in a plastic sleeve. This edition is known as the “de Klein” edition, named after the master screen printer who reproduced the work. Published as the opening piece of the collection *Poésie et vérité* (1942), the poem “Liberté, j’écris ton nom” was composed during the summer of 1941. Éluard himself referred to it as a “poem of the moment,” expressing the hope that sustained the fighters for liberation at that time. After the poet’s death in 1952, Pierre Seghers and Fernand Léger sought to pay tribute to him by publishing this poem as a book-object: a series of accordion-folded pages in vibrant colors, the first of which features a portrait of the author. The publication first appeared in 1953, printed using stencil printing. This edition was published around 1960, in a smaller format and screen-printed by master screen printer Roger Klein based on Léger’s composition. A very well-preserved copy, complete with its slipcase.
