JEANNEAU (Guillaume).
Cubist Art: Theories and Works. A Critical Study.
Paris: Éditions d'art Charles Moreau, [1929]. — In-4, 275 x 210: (4 ff.), 111 pp., (3 ff., last blank), 48 plates, illustrated cover. Paperback, padded cover.

First edition, now very rare, of this critical study of Cubist art, in which Guillaume Janneau first traces the origins of Cubism and its early experiments, then the formation of the school and the development of its doctrine. He then examines the School of Pure Painting, which emphasizes the organization of forms and planes, as well as Expressionist Cubism, in which Cubist construction is used to serve expression. Finally, he explores the movement’s impact and its place in art history.

The edition is illustrated with 49 reproductions, including one on the cover and 48 in the text. Among these are 13 stencil reproductions by Jacomet, based on works by Braque, Picasso (2), Albert Gleizes, Auguste Herbin, Louis Marcoussis, Georges Valmier, Fernand Léger (2), Henri Laurens (2, including the cover), André Lhote, and Juan Gris.

Copy number 351, from an unspecified print run.
