Gilded copper alloy statuette depicting the bodhisattva Avalokitesvara (Padmapani), Nepal or Tibet, Himalayan tradition, 19th–20th century
Depicted standing with a slight sway of the hips (tribhaṅga), the bodhisattva assumes an elegant and slender posture. The raised right hand forms a vitarka mudrā, the gesture of teaching, while the lowered left hand adopts a similar position. He is adorned with rich princely jewelry—necklaces, bracelets, and earrings—and is clad in a finely pleated dhoti held in place by an ornate sash, embellished with silver inlays. His head is crowned with a crown decorated with a kīrtimukha motif—a serene face with half-closed eyes. A blooming lotus, whose stem rests along his right forearm and rises behind his shoulder, is the characteristic iconographic attribute of Avalokiteśvara in his Padmapāṇi form, the bodhisattva of compassion.
