Ernst Rudolf Linck (1874–1963) Puppet by Sophie Taeuber-Arp for *The Deer King*, c. 1918. Period silver print. “Ernst Linck” stamp on the reverse. 16.6 x 12 cm In 1918, for an exhibition of the Swiss Werkbund, Alfred Altherr asked Sophie Taeuber to create the sets and figures for a puppet play adapted from Carlo Gozzi. In an innovative fusion of disciplines, this satirical attack on psychoanalysis combines sculpture (turned wood), painting, textiles, set design, and choreography. Praised by Tristan Tzara and Jean Arp—whose puppets appeared in the sole issue of the Dadaist magazine *Der Zeltweg*—the play nevertheless closed after three performances. The skepticism of the theater’s management and the Spanish flu pandemic sealed the fate of a production whose impact on art history far exceeds its fleeting existence.
