16th-CENTURY ITALIAN SCHOOL, circle of Rosso Fiorentino (Florence 1495–Fontainebleau 1540), after MASACCIO Adam, after the fresco in the Brancacci Chapel Red chalk. (Doubled drawing, significant losses at the bottom, sun-faded and with foxing). 25.4 x 11.5 cm Provenance: Briscardieu Estate Sale, Bordeaux, September 19, 2020, lot 9. Vasari reports that, in addition to Michelangelo, many artists admiringly copied Masaccio’s frescoes in the Church of Santa Maria del Carmine in Florence. Rosso continued this tradition in the early 16th century; and while we cannot venture an attribution, the very fine execution of this drawing can be likened to Rosso’s technique.
