This beautiful study recalls the technique of Giovanni Antonio Bazzi, and its subject matter—the heads of Dominican nuns—can be linked to *The Ecstasy of Saint Catherine of Siena*, a fresco painted around 1525–1526 in the Chapel of Saint Catherine of Siena within the Basilica of San Domenico. This inverted head also appears in the Fungai altarpiece, painted in 1496 for the Sanctuary of Saint Catherine of Siena, which may have served as a source of inspiration for Sodoma.
