MANUFACTURE Jules DESFOSSÉ *Le Jardin d’Armide*, created around 1855. Designer: Édouard Muller (1823–1876). Five strips forming a large, complete panel. Woodblock print. In very fine condition, never hung; colors are very fresh, but there is a missing section in the lower right corner of the center panel (poppy flower) and missing sections in the lower left corner of panel No. 4, along with scattered wear and stains, and small tears along the edges. Height: 290 to 300 cm. Width: 89 cm (the central panel) and 65 cm (for the four side panels), for a total width of 341 cm (approximately). Exhibitions: One copy was displayed at the 1855 Paris World’s Fair. Bibliography: Odile Nouvel-Kammerer, *Papiers peints panoramiques*, Paris, Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Flammarion, 1990, pp. 286–287. Source of inspiration: The statue of Armide is a life-size reproduction of James Pradier’s Pandora (exhibited at the 1850 Salon and then in London in 1851), in which only the tiara has been replaced by bindweed. The foundryman Labroue marketed a smaller version of this sculpture by Pradier in 1856.
