Nephrite sculpture depicting two finger-like lemons known as the “Hand of Buddha,” China, 18th–19th century
The pale beige sculpture, with shades of gray and ochre, depicts two finger-like citron fruits in a naturalistic style, commonly known as the “Hand of Buddha .” The citrus fruits, with their irregular and undulating contours, form long, delicately modeled and curved “fingers.” The lower section is openwork and carved in relief with foliage, stems, and plant elements, giving the piece a particularly naturalistic appearance. The sculpture skillfully makes use of the stone’s various tones and inclusions to highlight the volumes and details of the design. The “Buddha’s Hand” citron, whose shape evokes open fingers, is a motif particularly prized in Chinese art. It is associated with auspicious symbols, notably longevity, happiness, and prosperity, and is part of the tradition of scholar’s objects and symbolic jade sculptures.
