VERNE (Jules). Five Weeks in a Balloon: A Journey of Discovery in Africa by Three Englishmen. Paris: Bibliothèque d’éducation et de récréation, J. Hetzel, 1867. — In-8, 265 x 178: (2 ff.), 267 pp. Publisher’s cardboard binding in old rose percaline with “the second type of rose bouquets” pattern, known as “star-studded,” with comb-edged endpapers. New edition featuring 79 illustrations instead of the 51 found in the small 8vo version. Rare copy bound in the second edition’s cardboard binding, featuring “bouquets of roses” and a “spangled spine.” The back cover “features rich blind-stamped ornamentation with a central rosette appearing in a window at each of the four corners—which are themselves ornamented—and is further encircled by a blind-stamped border” (Jauzac, p. 14). This cardboard binding had a short-lived existence. This title, along with the first illustrated edition of *Journey to the Center of the Earth*, are the only ones to have been bound in it. A copy free of restoration, from the collection of Éric Weissenberg (1941–2012) (see lot no. 77). Normal wear and tear; spine slightly thinned. Inner hinges split. Foxing. Provenance: Éric Weissenberg, with bookplate (auction 10/04/2018, lot no. 197).
