[Anne de MONTMORENCY]. Letter addressed to him by “Ringane Cokbourn” [Cockburn], Montreuil, May 1 [1555]; 2 folio pages, with address.

An interesting letter from a captain regarding the siege of Montreuil by his company and that of Senarpont; he learned from prisoners that the horses had nothing left to eat but “reed stalks and roofing thatch”… He then gives news of “the Queen of Hungary” [Mary of Hungary, governor of the Netherlands], who “has committed great atrocities in the city of Antwerp, for some merchants from my country report that she had the heads of twelve of the city’s leading citizens cut off, their tongues cut out, and their ears cut into four pieces,” because they had refused to consent to the tax she was demanding… As for the English, who were driven out of both the King’s and the Emperor’s camps, they are causing “great harm around Saint-Haumere [Saint-Omer]”…
