Henri de RÉGNIER (1864–1936). Signed autograph manuscript, *La Vie littéraire*, [1928]; 6 pages, in-4.

A literary review devoted primarily to a book by his wife.
Published in the “Feuilleton littéraire” section of *Le Figaro* on August 7, 1928, this review is devoted primarily to the book by Gérard d’Houville (the pseudonym of Marie de Régnier), *La Vie amoureuse de la Belle Hélène* (Flammarion): “This daughter of the Swan and Leda was, by virtue of her beauty and by a decree of the gods, destined to awaken and satisfy the desires of men”… Helen of Sparta was “destined for love, but it must be acknowledged that she inspired it more than she felt it: she sought it less than she obeyed it. She was subject to a divine fate that governed her actions and feelings and shaped her into an immortal figure […] This life of love, as recounted by the beautiful Helen to little Erato, has been retold to us by Mme Gérard d’Houville in an admirable and charming book—painful and mischievous, profound and witty—written with a firmness, flexibility, and grace whose ease conceals an art so subtle that it remains invisible while making its skillful presence felt throughout.”...
The end of the review is devoted to the book by Maurice Soulié (1869–1937), *La Reine scandaleuse* (Payot), a biography of Caroline of Brunswick, Queen of England (1768–1821).
