Félicité de LAMENNAIS (1782–1854). Autograph letter, Monday, June 4, [1838], to Mlle Cornullier de Lucinière; 3 pages, in-8 format, with address. He received her letter, full of sadness, and mentions “our dear Villiers,” who is not expected to live much longer. He is aging considerably, no longer goes out much, and rarely ventures far from home: “I have completely stopped seeing several people who live closer to my neighborhood than you do. Traveling is too much for me […] My health can withstand more strenuous activity, but my work suffers as a result—and it is my work that sustains me.” Old friendships grow stronger with the years: “We draw closer to one another as the ranks thin out”… He ends on a positive note by announcing the birth of a child in Rennes to Augustine’s young family.
