Maurice BARRÈS (1862–1923). 5 letters, 1900–1907, to various recipients; 8½ pages, in-8 format, 3 letterheads. To Léon Hennique. Athens, May 18, 1900, thanking him “for your handshake regarding *L’Appel au Soldat*”; he explains that “the Moselle Valley is not just an appetizer; it is the heart of the three books, the soil in which my young characters are rooted, the soil from which they are uprooted”… – November 30, 1907: He announces the publication of *Le Rouet d’ivoire* by his compatriot Émile Moselly. To a friend. [April 1900]: He has read his *Bourget*; he is leaving for Greece on the 17th. – Charmes, August 21, 1906: He met Guitry, who encouraged him to write a play; but he was busy writing his speech on Heredia (for the reception at the Académie Française) and was desperately looking for a newspaper in which to publish “observations from the Chamber.” […] Whenever one needs the commercial enterprises that newspapers and theaters inevitably are—businesses in which financial interests are at stake and rightly defend themselves—one must appeal to the widest possible audience, and plays, articles, or novels that split the audience down the middle hold little appeal.”… – He regrets not being able to give the talk requested by his dear friend Germain.
