Maria EDGEWORTH (1768–1849), English novelist. Autograph letter, Edgeworth Town, July 28, 1818, to Étienne Dumont; 3 pages, in-8 format, addressed; in English.

[The Swiss jurist Étienne Dumont (1759–1829) was a collaborator of Mirabeau and the French translator of Jeremy Bentham.] She asks Dumont to request from Mr. Hunter the manuscript she had sent him. This manuscript is a copy of her father’s memoirs: “The Ms I have sent is a copy of my father’s part for his Memoirs.” Dumont will thus have time to read it before Maria arrives at Bowood. She is to spend some time in Bath with her sister beforehand and will be at Bowood by the end of August. She hopes to see Lady Lansdowne there, to whom she has written. Her mother-in-law, Mrs. Edgeworth, and her sister Fanny send their regards to Dumont, who already knows her sister Honora—whom he once admired for having compiled an index of the Broadwheel carriage reports: “She is that sister Honora whose affectionate diligence I recall you once admired when you were told that she compiled, from the voluminous reports of the Broadwheel Carriage Committee, a reasoned index of all the meaning contained in their mass of words”…
Enclosed is another autograph letter, Brighton, May 23, 1841, addressed to Miss Duckworth, in which he regrets not having been able to bring her the *Journal d’un an* himself before leaving London (1 p., in-12 format, mounted on a folio in-4 sheet with two addresses, one of which is by Prof. Edward Forbes).
