[THE DREYFUS AFFAIR]
I Accuse…! Letter to the President of the Republic
Paris, L’Aurore, Thursday, January 13, 1898. Unbound copy of (2) folios. First edition of Émile Zola’s famous manifesto addressed to President Félix Faure. (Creases and minor missing sections).

Included are:
4 other issues of *L’Aurore* signed by Zola, featuring a banner on the front page regarding the Dreyfus Affair:
- Issue No. 178 of *L’Aurore*, dated Thursday, April 14, 1898: “Response to the Summons” by Émile Zola.
(Creases and minor tears).
- Issue No. 222 of *L’Aurore*, dated Saturday, May 28, 1898: “My Father” by Émile Zola.
(Creases and minor tears).
- Issue No. 271 of *L’Aurore*, dated Saturday, July 16, 1898: “Letter to Mr. Henri Brisson” by Émile Zola.
(Creases and minor tears).
- Issue No. 704 of *L’Aurore*, dated Friday, September 22, 1899: “Letter to Madame Alfred Dreyfus” by Émile Zola.
(Creases and minor tears).
An exceptional collection of issues of *L’Aurore* devoting their front pages to the Dreyfus Affair. While the best known of these is Zola’s “J’accuse,” this collection as a whole illustrates the impact of this affair, which dominated the newspaper’s front page for two years. Furthermore, and this is worth noting, “J’accuse” is in good condition.

Émile Zola rallied the Dreyfusards when Ferdinand Walsin Esterhazy was acquitted. The impact of this letter, published in the daily newspaper *L’Aurore* and in which Zola calls upon Félix Faure as a witness, was immense. He accused and denounced the conspiracy orchestrated by the army. His action gave rise to the figure of the “committed intellectual.” Although this bold move cost the writer two trials and exile, it made the march toward justice inevitable. Dreyfus, finally exonerated in 1906, regained his honor and his distinctions, completing his military career with the rank of lieutenant colonel.
