Ayine mirror with facing sphinxes, Eastern Iran, Khorasan, 13th century Cast bronze disc, chased with two standing sphinxes back to back on either side of a central hanging knob, on a background of foliage scrolls. An inscription of greetings in kufic Arabic runs around the rim. Diameter: 10.4 cm Oxidation. Mirror models very similar to this one are preserved in public collections such as the Victoria and Albert Museum in London (Inv. 928-1886 and 442-1887) or the Musée du Louvre in Paris (OA 3945, OA 7871/72 or AD 14918, from which our mirror seems to take its inscription).
