Duthuit, Matisse, catalog des ouvrages illustrés, no. 19.

Matisse chose to base his illustrations on the female face. The frontispiece and the first 32 full-page compositions, the last of which is a portrait of Baudelaire, are all portraits of women. Nelck, whose features already accompany Reverdy's poems, and Lydia Delectorskaya, his customary model".
