TROYES. Manuscript, [circa 1750]; one volume in-4 (20.5 x 15 cm) of 193pages, contemporary brown basane binding. Chronicle of the city of Troyes. This chronicle may be the work of Canon Claude Bouillerot, whose funeral notice of November 5, 1760 is pasted to the flyleaf. A note indicates that "this manuscript was written in 1750, and copied [...] in the 8th year of the episcopate of Poncet de la Rivière" [bishop of Troyes from 1742 to 1758]. The manuscript, meticulously copied on pencil-ruled leaves, shows a few marginal annotations from the revolutionary period. This unfinished chronicle runs from 484 to 1344. In 1153, mention is made of the making of the "good silver hunt" for the relics of Saint Loup; a marginal note indicates that it was "broken, shattered and its pieces plundered by terrorists"... An entry in 1180 is devoted to the "famous Rabbi Salomon Isaaki" [Rachi]. In 1182-1183, mention is made of the expulsion of the Jews by Philippe-Auguste, who had the synagogues demolished: "there were several that were reserved, and which were changed into churches"... The manuscript transcribes, often in extenso, numerous original documents (charters, bulls, letters patent...): charter from Bishop Manassès II (1188); bull from Pope Clement IV (1268), sentence of excommunication against the abbesses and nuns of Notre-Dame aux Nonnains (1272), "inventory of reliquaries, jewels, sacred vessels, books" in the church of Saint-Urbain (1276); etc.
