Joseph Sève, known as SOLIMAN PACHA (Lyon 1788-1860) Imperial officer, generalissimo of the Egyptian armies, ancestor of King Farouk. L.A.S. "Soliman", Modon (Morée) March 27, 1826, to A. Rosetti in Livorno; 4pages in-4. Rare letter during the siege of Missolonghi [the day after the Greeks defeated the Turkish fleet at Chio and Candia, the Porte called for help from the Pasha of Egypt, whose son Ibrahim-Pasha laid siege to Missolonghi, which fell on April 2]. He has indeed received 12 cases of wine from Livorno, and claims the invoice he has not yet received... "The first shipment you made of soulliers was very bad. We weren't happy with it here, and for the second it took all Monsieur Ferri's activity, perseverance and good manners, which is no mean feat with the Turks, to get it accepted"... When Rosetti expressed a desire for drawings representing S.A. [Ibrahim-Pacha], Soliman-Bey did his utmost to satisfy him: "Although this is very difficult, as we have a lot of dabblers here and no draftsmen at all [...]. [...] We have nothing new here. S.A. is still in Missolongi, and we're getting ready to return to the campaign in the near future. In Modon, Coron and Navarin we had a few incidents of plague. This worried Mr. Henri Ferri in particular, but he was spared. The disease has subsided, and right now there's no more talk of anything"... He adds that Ferri "was kind enough to take on a black man to teach him a little about European customs. I recommend him to you as a friend, for I look upon this child as my son".
