SENS. Manuscript, Urbs antiqua Senon nulla expugnabilis arte, [17th c.]; 49feuillets petit in-4 in 11 cahiers (paper).

History of the city of Sens, in 4 books, with gaps, probably in the hand of Jacques Rousseau, parish priest of the church of Saint-Romain in Sens. The manuscript is written in small, tight cursive script in brown ink, with titles and headings in red ink, with additions on crutches. It includes: - the incomplete "To the Reader" notice at the beginning, followed in Latin by Elogia Urbis Senonicæ (pp. 9-13): - the beginning of Book I, Origine de la ville de Sens, chap. I-IV (p. 15-24), the booklet ending with an unencrypted f. with a table of chapters in Book II (churches and abbeys) and the beginning of the title of Book III; - the end of Book III: chap. XIV (incomplete from beginning) and chap. XV-XVII, on the Hostel de ville, the maréchaussée, and "la justice des eaües" (p. 543-551); - the Livre quatriesme (and last), Des Dehors de la ville de Sens, complete (p. 553-621), with dedication "A Messieurs les Maire et Eschevins de la Ville de Sens", signed I.R.P.C.D.S.R.D.S. [Jacques Rousseau priest parish priest of Saint-Romain de Sens], in 24 chapters, on ditches, boulevards, suburbs, Clos-le-Roy, Tau, laundries, rivers and rus, mills, fairs, Saint-Pierre-le-Vif abbey (justice, pardon fair, butchery), Aaron's fountain, plague house, "Maladerie du Popelain".

The Bibliothèque municipale de Sens (Ms 65) holds an incomplete manuscript (664 pages) of a Histoire de la ville de Sens by curé Jacques Rousseau in 1682; there were four copies in the author's handwriting, of which only two survive, including the one in the Crou collection donated to the Bibliothèque de Sens, and the one in the Tarbé collection.
