Charles de Sainte-Maure, duc de MONTAUSIER (1610-1690) maréchal de camp, governor of the Grand Dauphin, governor of Alsace, husband of Julie d'Angennes; said to be the model for Molière's Misanthrope. L.A.S., with 8 autograph lines from his wife Julie d'ANGENNES, Paris September 29, 1651, to Cardinal Mazarin; 3pages in-4, addressed with black wax seals on blue silk lakes. Beautiful and rare letter by both spouses. The duke fears that his letters will be lost, and worries about having "news of V E. only through the public voice"; he wishes to assure her "that I am always what I must be and that my zeal and passion for you quoy que tres inutiles ne laissent pas d'éclater en toutes occasions. Do me the honor, Monseigneur, of not doubting this, and of ordering me to do whatever you deem appropriate for your service, and you will know that among so many obliged people who have missed you, there is at least one who has not asked, and who will bring recognition to the utmost"... Julie d'Angennes takes up the pen to assure Mazarin that her "feelings for your Eminence do not differ from those explained to you in this letter", and asks him "to continue to honor me with your good graces Jose say that it is with justice since no one honors you with more passion than I". Attached is a l.a.s. from the prioress of Carmel de France, June 30, 1864, confirming to the Marquis de Sainte-Maure that Julie d'Angennes, in 1671, and her husband the Duc de Montausier, in 1690, were buried in the Carmel chapel. - A note explains the provenance of this letter, purchased by the Marquis de Sainte-Maure Montausier at the after-death sale of bookseller J.J. de Bure on December 23, 1853.
