MASSACRES OF SEPTEMBER. Manuscrit: Détail de ce qui s'est passé à la Section du Contrat Social le 2 7bre I792 lorsque Messieurs Chignard & Laurent furent arrachés au carnage de la Prison de l'Abbaye St Germain ; 4pages in-fol.

Very interesting account of this citizen of the Section du Contrat-Social who, despite the fear of the members of the Section's Assembly, succeeded in having himself appointed emissary of the Section, and who set off at the head of a small deputation to save their two fellow citizens from the massacre. They arrive at the passageway leading into the abbey courtyard, "blood streaming down it, corpses piled up [...] I arrive at the door of the Prison, where a hundred antropophagous [...] I demand entrance to this murderous horde, an unfortunate victim comes out, & the monsters immolate him, howling & crying out for strength". He is ushered in front of "what they called the tribunal, [...] a small, low & gloomy room, this place being lit by 2 lamps & many torches, by the glow of which some thirty cutthroats from the door I had just passed, drank with glittering eyes, their arms rolled up and covered in blood from head to toe". The tribunal itself consisted of "3 individuals wearing low & sinister figures", including President Maillard... Long discussion; our narrator, by dint of firmness and insistence, releases Chignard and Laurent from prison...
