MARIE-clotilde of France. L.A.S., Livorno September 25, 1799, to her brother-in-law the Duc de Maurienne; 1 page in4 (light stain). Interesting letter about his flight from Piedmont in the face of French troops. The letter is written on behalf of her husband, "still quite damaged" by the hasty crossing they have just made from Piedmont. Mr. Windham has come all the way from Florence "to bring us letters which have been intercepted from Consul Coffin to the Directory, in which he plans a descent of Corsica, and a revolution in Sardinia, although the arrest of Sullis persuades us that all their projects are thwarted, nevertheless the King having fortunately found icy, a small Russian fleet, has asked Admiral [Sovarow] to go to Sardinia[....] but as he has only large vessels, he cannot hold out at the mouths of Boniface, and he is divided between Cagliari and Porto Conti"... Attached are 3 l.s. by Pajot and by the comte de Tonnerre, September 6-8, 1775, on the arrival of the new princess of Piedmont at Pont-de-Beauvoisin: report on the ceremonies, the introductions, the first interview of the newlyweds, the arrival of Monsieur and Madame [the comte de Provence and Joséphine de Savoie, sister of Charles-Emmanuel IV], etc. (9p. infol.).
