[LOUIS XVIII]. P.A. by Chevalier de Maizières, 12 floréal/1er mai [1795]; 4pages in-4.

Curious report on Louis XVIII's wanderings and his arrival at Condé's army.

The chevalier first recounts the arrival of the "roy" in Freiburg im Breisgau, and his meeting with the British ambassador Wickam, then his departure for the Prince de Condé's army. The Republic of Venice, threatened by a French declaration of war, had forced him to leave Verona; before leaving, he asked "that he be given the armor that Henry IV had given to the Republic of Venice. He was given only the sword with which he arrived at Condé's army. At his first meeting with the Prince, he embraced him and said, My cousin and general, I lay at your feet the sword of Henry IV, to learn from you how to use it. The king was perfectly welcomed by his kinsmen", a sentiment little shared by the rest of the nobility: "The king would rally around his person only a very small number of men"; he had had made for himself, to appear in the army, "a noble hunter's uniform [...] He only appeared a little more ridiculous, so clumsy and massive was his bearing". There is some debate about his presence in the army: "The Austrians seem dissatisfied with the arrival of the King: they are very much afraid of seeing hostilities resume".
