Jacques Nompar de Caumont, duc de LA FORCE (1558-1652) maréchal de France. Manuscript memorandum sent to Cardinal de Richelieu, June 30, 1634; 4pages in-fol. Siege of La Mothe (in the Barrois region) during the Thirty Years' War. The town capitulated on July 26. Denis Charpentier, secretary to Cardinal de Richelieu, noted in the margin of the last page: "Mre envoyé par Mr le Mal de la Force le dernier juin 1634". It is reported that the three attacks were able to open three mines; it will take three weeks for the undermining work. The marshal "had a large battery of twelve or thirteen cannons erected to ruin a bastion in front of the gate", which would allow four attacks to be carried out at once. But ammunition was in short supply, and he detailed the measures taken to bring in cannons, cannonballs, powder, etc. from Metz, Chalons and Verdun. An autographed visiting card from the Duc de La Force, Académie Française, to the collector Jacques Haumont is enclosed.
