Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901)
The Hanged Man (2nd pl.). Poster. 1895. Lithograph. 600x790mm. Delteil 340; Wittrock P15. Color printing. Fine proof on thin vellum, finely lined on thin japon. Small restored tears at edges, visible through transparency. Small hole in the hanged man's left shoulder. Small gap filled on the left in the subject. Very rare. Edition of 30 proofs.

This subject is a reproduction of an 1892 poster designed to advertise La Dépêche de Toulouse and its new soap opera, the first episode of which was announced for April 16, 1892. This novel by A. Siégel, Les Drames de Toulouse, recounts the misadventures of Toulouse families between 1761 and 1815: the Calas affair, the battle of Pech-David, the assassination of General Ramel. "The small number of posters printed in 1895 indicates that this edition was intended for collectors, not for use as an advertisement" (W. Wittrock, Toulouse-Lautrec, Catalogue complet des estampes, Courbevoie, ACR éditions, Éditions de l'Amateur, 1985, vol. 2, p. 784).
