Abraham Bosse (1602 or 1604-1676) The Reformed Lady. Circa 1634. Etching and burin. 205x290mm. Duplessis 1357; Lothe206. Very fine proof on laid paper, trimmed on the plate cut but complete with tablet. "This engraving relates to the edicts tending to reform fashion. In a plush, well-decorated interior, a lady occupies the center of the image. She is quite elegantly dressed. She wears a necklace and bracelets on her low-cut, trimmed dress. Standing in front of a mirror, she holds a fan in her left hand. But the annoyed expression on her face and, above all, the indignant gesture of her right hand express her anger. This edict obliged her to abandon the ornaments that served "nature to increase its beauty". The adjective "reformed" here has no connection with the Reformed religion to which Bosse belonged".
