16th-century French school, probably by Etienne Dumonstier (Paris, c. 1540-1603)
Portrait of a man with an earring, probably from the immediate entourage of King Henri IV, in beige quilted pourpoint, small turned-down shirt collar edged with lace, against a blue background.
Oval miniature on vellum, 5.3 x 4 cm.
Restorations, detachments; unframed.

Mrs. Alexandra Zvereva, whom we would like to thank for her help with this notice, believes it is very probably by Etienne Dumonstier and dates it from the 1590s, around 1593-1595. The figure is difficult to identify. He bears a certain resemblance to Odet de La Noue, Seigneur de Téligny, or Charles de Balzac d'Entragues, known as le bel Entraguet (compare his portrait attributed to François Quesnel, 1581, BnF).
