Burgundy lacquer snuffbox, Japan, 1850-1920 Of flattened escutcheon form, in brown lacquer on a wooden core inlaid with mother-of-pearl, gold and silver. It features a fisherman on a sampan in the center of a stretch of water bordered by rocks, a straw hut and a wutong on one side. On the reverse, pavilions perched atop a mountain from which rises an old pine leaning over a body of water. The outline of both sides, the shoulders and the collar are adorned with geometric friezes. The foot and top of the neck are in gilded copper alloy. En suite stopper.
