Small blue-glazed porcelain plate, known as Hué blue, China for Vietnam, 18th - 19th century
Decorated in the center with a narrative composition depicting a stylized mountainous landscape traversed by swirling waters, illustrating the theme of the procession of Taoist immortals on their way to the celebration of Xiwangmu's birthday (西王母). The scene is organized in superimposed registers in an ascending dynamic. In the lower register, starting from the bottom left, appears Lan Caihe (蓝采和), holding a paidan, an instrument used to mark the rhythm of songs, figured in the form of a tool reminiscent of a hoe, followed by Zhang Guolao (张果老), recognizable by his mount and holding a yugu, a percussion instrument. On a stepped bridge spanning the waves, stand He Xiangu (何仙姑), carrying a lotus flower, and Lü Dongbin (吕洞宾), identifiable by the sword worn on his back and the fly swatter in his hand. In the middle register, on the left, a celestial servant sails in a boat carved from a trunk, moving among waters rendered by concentric scrolls. In the upper right, Xiwangmu appears riding a phoenix, accompanied by two celestial servants on stylized clouds, holding large feather fans. Below, an unidentified four-character sigillary mark.
Diameter: 17 cm
Restoration with a probable alloy of lead and pewter and metal strapping.
